Since the 1830’s, Toledo Harbor has been an important Lake Erie shipping center. The old lighthouse located on nearby Turtle Island was inadequate to clearly mark the entrance to the harbor for the increasing flow of shipping traffic.

In 1904 a state of the art lighthouse was built. A sturdy artificial island that extends some 20 feet into the lake bed was built for the truly unique Romanesque structure, which stands 69 feet tall. The new lighthouse employed a 3 ½ order Fresnel lens to shine a light across the lake, enabling ships as far away as 16 miles to find safe passage.
The station was automated in 1954. Time and weather have taken its toll on this beautiful structure. An amazing group of people formed the Toledo Harbor Lighthouse Preservation Society, and have been diligently working to restore the lighthouse to its former grandeur.
If you are interested in supporting this wonderful group please visit their site toledoharborlighthouse.org. Restoration and renovation projects take an amazing amount of time and energy and this group really know how to get things done.
